I think the "new" Holmes/Watson fandom (over at holmeswatson09) is a little bit awesome. Because the fans are able to take this wall-banging idiocy and create dry discussions, clever mocking and outright glee. Take this comment for example:

But by focusing oh possible homosexual subtext like this, Ms. Plunket is ignoring a far more important issue! There was absolutely no racist, pro-Imperialist, or anti-Mormon rhetoric in the movie at all! Clearly it was an unfaithful adaption, made with no respect to the author's original intentions, and should be pulled from the theaters immediately.

or why not this one:

No guys. Guys. We should be happy about this. Since she's a crazy with no power, her attempt to get rid of the amazing subtext in the movies will most likely cause Guy Ritchie to create more subtext in the next one. Just to rub it in her face.

Hopefully Guy Ritchie is that kind of person.

Fandom, how I love thee. ♥

comments

Another conversation I had with my brother today:

Him: What if Marvel made a comic about Sherlock Holmes?
Me: Say what?
Him: It would be, like, Super Sherlock, solving crimes while flying through London in a trench coat*.
Me: Marvel would probably take a shot at it, if they could. But it just wouldn't work, you know? Sherlock Holmes is realistic, Marvel is... well, Marvel, they're just not compatible.
Me: ... Unless the Avengers were sent by mistake into Sherlock Holmes' world, then I suppose it could work.
Him: Dimension travel?
Me: Yeah.
Me: And it would take Holmes 0.2 seconds to deduce that they were super-humans.
Him: ...
Me: Well, they wouldn't be in costume, duh. That'd be too obvious.
Him: Spiderman would definitely say "Elementary, my dear Watson."
Me: That quote is not cano—!
Him: No, I know, but he'd still say it.
Me: ...Yeah. And Holmes would turn to Watson and say something like "Ah, yes, your romanticized accounts of our cases."
Him: Who else?
Me: Tony.
Him: Oh, God.
Me: Tony would totally nerdgasm.
Him: Definitely.
Me: And he'd immediately start tinkering with something. Steam punk!
Him: Yes, steam punk!
Him: He'd build a steam-driven Iron Man suit in no time flat, and probably a computer as well.
Me: Probably. And then he'd geek out with Holmes over— Oh, God, imagine Tony and Holmes by the chemical set or whatever, both in nerd-mode.
Him: Things would explode.
Me: Definitely. And Steve would just shake his head.
Him: Together with Watson.
Him: They're pretty alike, aren't they, Steve and Watson?
Me: Both long-suffering friends of eccentric nerds, yeah.
Him: Friends? [raises eyebrow] Oh, well. They could bond over that while Tony and Holmes target practice indoors.

* = This conversation took place shortly after I'd, er, informed my brother that trench coats have no place whatsoever in Victorian England.

comments

My younger brother's become a Deadpool fan. I thought he might like him, so I tentatively showed the first six issues of Cable & Deadpool to him, after having warned him profusely about, well, everything.

We’ve come as far as issue #13. After having read the "Thirty Pieces" arc, the following conversation took place:

Him: Wait, Rob Lowe? Anna, is Deadpool gay?
Me: Honestly? I... have no idea. I'm sorry, when I started reading this, I had no idea there would be this much ho-yay.
Him: Hey, it's okay. I don't mind.
[A few minutes later]
Him: "The sweetest sound I've ever heard?"
Can someone please tell me when promoting a film became synonymous with the two male leads gushing about and blatantly "man-crushing" on each other?

Now, if you excuse me, I need to go and salvage whatever remains of my brain; the thought of Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law together is clearly too much for me to handle.

Also, almost apropos of nothing, I think I'm falling in love with katieforsythe's fics. I also really like Patrick Zircher's style; his smug and/or half-naked Tony is to die for. ♥

The only thing that miffs me is that while I tick off box after box of the Stark Suicide Special Bingo Card, I still don't get bingo!
Curse you, Robert Downey Jr., curse you to hell.

I don't know when this started, I can't actually remember the exact moment. I was cruising along just fine, fancying certain actors but not being infatuated, everything was good and nice and I was content. Then, suddenly, out of the blue, somewhere between watching Kiss Kiss Bang Bang for the twelfth time and accidentally stumbling upon Iron Man while zapping for the second time, I went from "Oh, yes, he's a nice bloke, cracking fine actor, mind you, didn't he have some troubles with his private life?" to "OHMYGOD EYESSMILEFACEBODYVOICEARMSARSELEGSFEETHANDSHANDSEYES YESPLEASESEXNOWPLEASEYESYES?"

Why, RDJ, why? Whatever have I done to you to deserve this?

I mean, I can't watch Iron Man in public any more. I go crazy-staring and grunt inappropriately at embarrassing moments (never again will I be able to think of smiths and not degenerate to a driveling state of brain death) and I strongly suspect I'm wearing a goofy smile as well. This is entirely new to me. I've fancied and found other actors attractive before, but this feeling of absolute willingness to jump into bed is something quite different. I suppose it's bye-bye to my vows of chastity, eh?

Mum's nice about it, though. When she figured out – which, admittedly, was rather quickly, but I wasn't exactly subtle about it – she only nodded slowly and hesitantly and more or less told me "Hey, whatever floats your boat, love." Then she approached me some days later and not-so-subtly talked to me about how self-destructiveness is not romantic, how alcoholism is a very bad thing indeed, how drugs and licentious sex and not taking care of yourself in general are even worse, and that Florence Nightingale should be bottled up and thrown out a window. I… am aware of this? Have been for a really long time? I adore Tony Stark, and I take a disquietingly sadistic pleasure in seeing him torture himself, but I'm dead certain that if I ever met him in real life, I'd run as fast as I could in the other direction. (Alternatively, I'd let him bed me and then run. Tell me, fellow feminists, is it degrading if a woman, who most certainly wants to be sexed up by the handsome, attractive and most-probably-fantastic-in-bed playboy, has a one-night stand with said man and then gets on with her life?)

I don't think dad has twigged yet -- astoundingly enough, with me turning reptile brain and emitting ruttish roars whenever anything concerning RDJ comes up -- but he's incredibly slow in that department, so no surprise there. I just fear the mocking and ridicule that will inevitably ensue when he does find out.

comments

Good morning/day/afternoon/night/life/Armageddon, this is Anna's Brain's PA speaking.

We're glad to inform you that after weeks of reconstruction, things are finally up and running again. There has been some major changes in Anna Tower, however, and we hope visitors will not become too confused by them.

As some of you may remember, apart from the lobby and the department "Random Obsessions" on the 4th floor, all floors were dedicated to heathen Harry Potter worship.
The new Anna Tower still has the heathen worship as its main fuction, but two of the top floors are currently being rebuilt to accommodate shrines for the worship of Marvel's The Avengers and Iron Man. "Random Obessions" has also gained two permanent departments: "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" and "Robert Downey Jr."

Old regulars need not to worry. Despite these changes, the remaining ten floors are still in the exact same condition as they were before the reconstuction. After all, Harry Potter holds over 50% of the shares.

- -

PM from the CEO: Yes, this means my hiatus is officially over. Also, I'm setting up base in the Marvel Adventures and IM: The Movie 'verses, because they are pretty and cracky and non-angsty and I like them.

comments

Hullo, everyone!

Sorry for disappearing for a week just like that; I had <strike>an unusually mild case of</strike> PMS, so I wasn't feeling very sociable, but now I'm back. ♥

So what did I do during this period, apart from indulging in self-pity and chocolate? Getting obsessed with American fake-news-slash-satire shows, of course! *headdesk*
( Allow me to explain… )

( Two fic recs. (Oi, a HP one, folks!) )

What else? Hm… Well, I'm working on a (very belated) journal-entry where I'll show my <strike>poor</strike> attempts at painting. Should be ready for posting… soonish. Hopefully.

Otherwise, I'm actually pondering if I should change my journal layout. I still want something spacious and mostly-white, but perhaps along with sky-blue or maybe even red? Not pink, in any case. I'm also considering going through my icons and do some thorough cleaning. Is this something worth considering or should I just drop it?

Also. Since I can't have a credit card until I'm legal (i.e. eighteen) is there any way of paying for another year at LJ without actually having to transfer money from a plastic card? Like, something along the lines of SellYourSoul.com or something like that?

comments

I'm an on-and-off reader of the Swedish science magazine Illustrerad Vetenskap ("Science Illustrated" in English) and in their latest number they had an article about beauty. It was interesting, pretty focused on the whole biological aspect of it, and they presented several manipulated faces that people participating in the experiment had found more beautiful than real faces. Among those, there was an image that showed the most unattractive vs. the most attractive (manipulated) faces in both men and women. This is what scientists came up with:

I... can't say I agree with that. They look far too bland and scary. If I got to have a say on the subject, I'd actually say that this is a lot more accurate:

( With the help of Photoshop, and behind cut for your convenience, I present you this. )

Or something like this:

( Behind curtain number two… )

Or perhaps this:

( Curtain number three is the final one, people! )

I could continue this list forever.
How about you? Which means that I've been up for more than 24 hours straight now. Huh, a new record for me, that. In a way, it's actually quite comfortable; my body's not feeling restless any more, and my mind seems to finally have stopped being revved up for once in my life. On the other hand, I feel a bit dizzy and my moods swings are even more inexplicable and sudden than usual. I think I'll eat a quick brunch (it's almost noon here) and then I'll see if I can get some sleep.
Thank you all for the well-wishes! ♥ The trip was fine, apart from that little thing about leaving the house and all. But I survived, though I'm about to collapse any minute and won't be very social for the next few days. I need a holiday after having been on holiday. (Welcome to the life of an Asperger personality!)

These are the things I learnt during my visit to my uncle, his wife and baby cousin:

Two-year-olds are complete monsters, though impossibly cute at times. About 95% monster and 5% sugar.

I will never ever ever spawn.

Dogs are the most amazing animal on earth, and as soon as the White Coats come up with a pill/treatment/cure for dog allergy, I'll get one. I'm already planning it out in my head.

I will never go on another trip again. Well, one more time, since I have to go and get my future pup one day. Oh, and maybe a couple of more times when I'll visit the UK. But other than that, no thank you!

Elvis Costello isn't just a genius, he's pure genius.

Now I have to catch up on my mail and f-list.
Wotcher, everyone!

See, the thing is, it’s summer right now and that means everyone’s zapping round the world like it was the 11th Commandment or something, and apparently not even I can avoid it. I’m going off to see my uncle, his wife and my baby cousin tomorrow, and I won’t be back until Thursday.

I’m leaving around noon or so tomorrow and I’ll be back Thursday evening, if everything goes according to plan. I won’t have internet access during the trip, so I’ll be pretty much absent for almost a week.

I hope everything’s well with you lot and will keep on being until I'm home again! ♥

And no, I don’t know what’s up with my journal.
